I remember the day vividly—a day that began like any other but ended with me curled up on the floor, gasping for breath, caught in the grip of a panic attack that seemed to come out of nowhere. I had achieved everything I thought would make me happy: a successful career, recognition from my peers, and a comfortable life. Yet, there I was, overwhelmed by a suffocating sense of emptiness. It was as if all the success I had chased had turned into a prison, locking me away from the true essence of life. In that moment of desperation, I realized that I had lost my way, and I was living a life that no longer felt purposeful or meaningful.
That experience was my wake-up call, forcing me to confront the reality that the external markers of success I had been pursuing were not enough to fill the void within me. It became clear that purpose is not something that can be handed to you, nor is it found in the accolades, money, or status that society often equates with fulfillment. Purpose, I discovered, is something that must be created from within—crafted through self-awareness, a deep understanding of one’s core values, and a commitment to living in alignment with those values.
As I began to reevaluate my life, I asked myself some tough questions: What do I truly value? What brings me joy? What strengths do I possess that I’m not fully utilizing? It was a humbling process, peeling back the layers of societal expectations and the roles I had assumed over the years. I realized that my unhappiness stemmed from a misalignment between my values—such as family, connection, and personal growth—and the life I was living, which had become overly focused on career success and external validation.
Through this introspection, I came to understand that purpose is not a destination but a journey—one that involves continuous growth, learning, and adaptation. I began to shift my focus from what I was "supposed" to do to what I genuinely wanted to do. I explored new opportunities that allowed me to use my strengths in ways that felt meaningful and enjoyable. It wasn’t an easy path, but with each step, I felt more aligned with my true self, and the sense of fulfillment that had eluded me for so long began to emerge.
One of the most important lessons I learned is that purpose is intricately tied to the impact we make on others. But it’s not just about making an impact for the sake of it; it’s about doing so in a way that resonates with our passions and interests. I found that when I leveraged my strengths to help others in ways that I truly enjoyed, my sense of purpose grew stronger. It was no longer about ticking off boxes on a career checklist but about living a life that felt rich with meaning and connection.
Feeling underutilized and stagnant in my career was a major contributor to my existential crisis. I realized that I had been playing it safe, sticking to a path that no longer challenged or inspired me. So, I took a leap of faith and sought out new opportunities that better aligned with my abilities and passions. This wasn’t just about changing jobs; it was about changing my approach to life—being open to growth, willing to take risks, and courageous enough to pursue what truly mattered to me.
The journey to finding and creating purpose is deeply personal. It requires us to be honest with ourselves, to confront our fears, and to be willing to make changes—even when they’re uncomfortable. It’s about recognizing that fulfillment doesn’t come from external achievements but from living in harmony with our core values and passions. And most importantly, it’s about realizing that purpose is not something you stumble upon; it’s something you build, day by day, as you align your life with who you truly are.
I want you to take a moment and ask yourself—are you living a life that truly fulfills you, or are you simply going through the motions, chasing goals that no longer ignite your passion? I’ve been where you are, feeling the weight of success without the satisfaction, waking up to the realization that the life I was living wasn’t aligned with who I truly am. But let me tell you this: purpose isn’t something that’s handed to you, and it’s not found in the external achievements we often strive for. Purpose is something you create from within, by connecting deeply with your core values, understanding what truly brings you joy, and having the courage to realign your life with those truths.
